Tram Nation Traxx Stars (Interview)

SkyTram Mixes It Up With The Hottest Music Acts and Producers In The Biz

In The Mix: Phil Crawf

Phil Crawf is a highly touted deejay and producer from Northern Ireland who has the gift for conjuring up an explosive array of new trance, house and electro-influenced records and bootleg dance remixes. Crawf has received global recognition for his electro-house remix of the Kings of Leon’s hit single Sex on Fire. He also achieved international fame on BBC Radio 1 for his unofficial remixes of U2, MGMT and The Enemy. This year, under his own record label, Crawf produced and recorded his own massive club tune in I Heart You. Phil Crawf dropped by our domain to share his thoughts on his upcoming new singles, favorite records and life in Belfast.

Could you share with us how you got your first big break in the music biz? It was a demo tape I had to give to a club owner! ‘Tapes’ how retro am I?

The new single, Splash is wicked and one of my favorite new club tunes this year. What was your inspiration behind it? It has to be the main old-skool style riff in the break! It makes the hairs stand up!

Your remixes of La Roux, The Enemy, MGMT and Kings of Leon are amazing. Could you briefly describe the challenges of getting these remixes approved for official release? Well, when you do your own remixes of the best tracks around, it’s hard to get these released because you own no rights to the tracks. Therefore, you would have to get them re-sung by someone good enough to do them justice and buy the publishing of the label who owns the rights of the songs! After all that, it would not be worth doing it because they would make all the money. That’s why it’s important to make your own tracks and not just remixes!

Are there any new remix projects on the way that you could share or tease for us? Under my house alter ego ‘Mr Groove’ comes a great track called Subliminal & I’ve done my harder ‘Phil Crawf’ remix of course, also another ‘Mr Groove' track called Sound Allergy.

What other projects do you have in the fire?
I’m working on some other Phil Crawf tracks as well as a possible album!

Favorite new band in Europe:
La Roux

Favorite band from Ireland:
(other than U2)?< Snow Patrol!!!

Favorite American Band: The Kings of Leon just Rock J

Best song, album and remix you have heard this year?
Best Song: Rank 1 - L.E.D. There Be Light
Album: Kings Of Leon - Only By The Night
Remix: Morgan page - Longest Road Feat. Lissie (Lex Da Funk Remix)

If you could travel back in time to any point in history, what would it be? What tunes would be on your setlist?
The 90s, warehouse raves & with my current tracks, the tunes were good back then, but I think the productions are far better now! It would just wreck the place! Or at the very least you would be known as the new guy with the weird tunes!

If I were going to recommend a travel itinerary to Belfast and Northern Ireland, what would be some of your local favorites:
Favorite Club: Love Fridays @ the beach club

Favorite Pub: Anyone that’s round the town centre there all good! They sell drink don’t they!
Favorite Record Shop: Bass Division
Favorite Restaurant: Tony Roma’s! World famous Ribs!
